I just washed mine and installed a new head ban that was given to me , I have new respect for my classic ecrin -roc just think if it could talk about all the adventures it's been on
Made it look easy
2:32 I see some frame wear in the process!
Thank you for taking us to see some of G-d's beautiful creations that we would likely never see otherwise. You all must be in great physical and mental condition to be capable of those climbs. Amazing!
For future videos, please adjust the volume ratio of music to voices. I can barely hear the climbers' voices over the music. Otherwise, beautiful video. Thank you!
If anyone finds a Petzl AmD at the bottom of Incredible, please let me know. It might have taken a tumble back in May courtesy of a buddy.
Great to see you guys back in the Bluegrass !
What are the advanced navigation techniques you mention?
It's a complex multi-level system with many vertical obstacles. It's wise to go with someone who knows where they are going, what length ropes are required, the best way to rig pitches, etc. This increases the odds of having a fun adventure rather than a terrible epic. Most of the cave is between the two big pits, so getting lost or injured down there has more serious consequences than in most caves because one or the other of these pits needs to be climbed to exit.
Incredible footage! The long rappel especially
Gotta love the leisurely sport trips. All pretties, no suffering. ❤
All of the videos I've seen of this cave are both thrilling and terrifying at the same time, and this video matches. I hope to see this cave one day, but for now, no way!
Thank you Derek for this Fantastic video pun intended 😁. This cave and those pits are a goal of mine (bucket list). I'm trying my best to gain the experience I need to work up to them.
Thank you for this video. Adjust your rack.
I was at stairstep this past saturday, is a cool part of the cave!
I really wish i could go caving too. I´ve been watching your channel for 5 years now and it really inspires me. Good to see you're back, Derek.
What are you waiting for find a grotto for a group gear up go on a trip
@@trav_adventures I live in New York City. There is a grotto here (Met Grotto) but there aren't many caves near the city. Trips are usually very far. Unfortunately i don't have the time or means to go on these trips.
Oh, that brings back memories. During the TAG convention back in the 90's we dropped Warm-up Pit and Fantastic Pit, and I remember there was an aluminum lawn chair at the very bottom which no one would sit in due to falling debris danger. My rack got danged hot, and we sprayed water on it at the bottom to cool it back down so we didn't melt the rope as I unhooked. When we simul-climbed back out the carbide lamps barely illuminated the shaft walls due to the cloud layers, and we felt like spiders hanging in the infinite void, bouncing gently up and down on PMI rope stretch and projecting grotesque shadows of each other on the misty clouds. It was a long climb, even with a bungeed rope walking setup, and after finally popping out warmup pit and hiking down, I slept the sleep of the very dead. Great video. I wish we had your lights back then. Back in camp, snoozing in the late afternoon, the good old boys lit off the giant pile of logs with a six foot pipe filled with black powder. It went off like a saturn-5 rocket and scared the bejeezus out of everyone, requiring a change of shorts for anyone camped next to the bonfire. Hot dogs, anyone? Love your videos.
Great story, I enjoy the read! This cave is a goal of mine to accomplish.
Man now that’s a pit
Can't get over how dry the pit is during the drought. Great video.
Derek, when I see one of your videos pop up in my YT feed, I am a happy 77 year old former caver whose knees and lower back have kept me on the surface for a long long time! This video is amazing. Those pits are HUGE. In my next life, I'll master the art of ascending a rope. We had only Prusik knots in 1972. The descending gear looks better now, too. Thanks for another super production. Fun to watch.
I'm seventy, same complaints. Love to see these vids, and dream.
Great video
Nice video. Thats my "backyard"! Amazing and humbling place. Are you going to check out Flowing Stone too?
Oh Flowing Stone that's on my bucket list too along with these two magnificent pics
Oh Flowing Stone that's one on my list right along with these 2 magnificent pits.
Derek, great video as always. It caught my attention when you mentioned Ohio State University - I went caving in the late 70's and early 80's with, what was then, the Program of Outdoor Pursuits at main campus. Look forward to more of your videos.
El Petzl Stop, está mal configurada la cuerda.
I was lucky to have been to this cave (and a few others nearby). Thank you for highlighting this one!
Lovely cave.
Gracias Amigo, Buen video 🦇
Muchas Gracias Amigo, Buen video 🦇
This type of water cave is soo much fun. Love it.
You know it’s going to be good when she’s doing something funny in the beginning
Wow! That helictite chamber is breath taking. Now I know I'll have a nightmare of being in there, losing my footing, then flailing my arms to catch my clumsy self, while at the same time destroying thousands of years of helictiite growth! Yikes! Thank you so much for showing off all this glory. Fantastic!
This reminds me of a cave I visited with friends in southern Indiana in the early 1970's. We had to pay careful attention to the weather forecast because water like that can rise quickly. 4 Indiana University students died when a cave not far from their campus became water filled and denied them return access to the entrance. It's fun to get wet like that, but it scares me a little. A bit of healthy fear never hurts. Thanks for sharing. I wish I had had your camera in 1971!
Loved it! Brought back memories of caving in Wayne and Clinton counties back in the 80s and 90s.
Great Video!!
Hot take: Derek Bristol is actually a Kentucky Caver. #fightme
Wayne County caves are pretty cool. Great to see you showing them off.
Could you explain what kind of suits you are wearing? I'm assuming they are waterproof. How do you keep your feet dry?
Most cavers are wearing AV suits that are nylon with a water-resistant coating over top of a ~3mm wetsuit. These cave suits are not fully waterproof. Boots are typically either wellies or canyoneering boots. Wellies are a better choice if the water in the cave is less than shin-deep, which is not the case in McFails. We typically wear neoprene socks in deeper water caves such as this.
@@DerekBristol Thank you for the explanation.
Fantástico essa exploração! 😮 O bom é que tem gente corajosa pra filmar esses segredos, pra gente como eu que nao teria coragem de ir tao longe, tao de parabéns obrigada 😁😄☺️👏👏
Thank you
Thank you
Miss this area so much! I used to live in Priddy about 3 miles away, Cheddar caves and wookey hole and connected waterways fascinated me.
I love my Apple IPhone! It’s got a GPS and a compass app 😁, I just don’t think I’d waste that kind of money on something that’s outdated and has defects. If I pay that kind of money for something, I expect quality and expect it to last!

Say, where are your safety goggles? YOUR video, @ 0:37sec: NOTE: Always wear safety glasses when hammering on metal. So your message was "Do as I say, Not as I do?" Oversight, baby.
Super interesting
I was in this cave as a school kid in the spring of 1987. It was one of the best times of my life. I was there with my 2 best friends and 3 of my best school teachers Mrs Ridenbach and Mrs Donna and Mr Joel Hummel.
Im Going with a group. It’s a tour they do around here locally. They have equipment for you. Still Kind of nervous lol
I was on a caving bingewatch and curious how the cave could have gotten mapped, I am a geodesy graduate so I know a bit about land surveying but never know about how you could do it inside a tight cave, a quick watch here and I found out how, very nice and informative video 🙌👏
Have you done a video on the Texas system? I can’t seem to find it
I know you don't get a lot of views but I appreciate the crap out of your videos! Thank you!
Hi Derek! This is Kevin Downs. Will this work with a Scurion headlamp? I tried to make a twin battery pack and the light came on but only flashed when I changed levels. I didn’t use a pcb board. Is that what I did wrong?
Hey Kevin. A PCB isn’t required, but a good idea for safety. For the Scurion a 2-cell battery should work fine if they are wired in series (as shown in this video). You should have a voltage of about 8.4V when fully charged, and 6.0V when fully discharged (7.2V nominal = 50% charge).
Ok. I wired them parallel. I’ll bet that’s why it didn’t work right. Thanks Derek!
Yep… your voltage is too low.
